Early Head Start Program

The Early Head Start Program serves a total of 120 children, families, and pregnant women and services the entire island of St. Croix. We aim to accomplish this by partnering with parents of low-income families to promote the development of the total child by providing for their cognitive, physical, creative, social, and emotional needs while assisting parents to learn the skills needed to support their child’s growth and development, with special emphasis on school readiness. The EHS Program has three components:

The Center-Based Program

The Center-Based program of Early Head Start operates classrooms that are developmentally appropriate and in accordance with guidelines established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The program uses High Scope, a play-based curriculum that focuses on each child’s individual development and interests. Children are encouraged to explore, create, problem solve and make choices throughout their day. Daily communication between the family and center staff supports the child’s development and the formation of a strong parent-teacher bond.

The Home-Based Program

Our Home Based services are available to children from infant to three years of age. A Home Based Visitor will visit the home weekly for about 90 minutes and assist the family in identifying areas which the parent feels are important to their child’s development. The Home Based Visitor will also provide support and guidance in assisting the family with identifying and achieving goals. Home visits are scheduled at a time that is convenient with family routines. Twice monthly, socialization’s are held on general topics for discussion, training, or hands on activities. This allows an interchange with other parents and support in mastering parenting skills.

The Pregnant Woman's Program

Early Head Start provides support and educational services to pregnant women. The goal of this component of the program is to provide the information, education and support needed to pregnant women to ensure that they have a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Pregnant women are visited once a week in the home by a Home Visitor. The Home Visitor follows the curriculum, Partners for a Healthy Baby, which is specific to pregnancy and post-natal experience. The weekly visit helps to foster the understanding of prenatal and postpartum development. Good health practices are encouraged to support a healthy outcome for mother and new-born child.
